“For delivery, we use Looker or Metabase, depending on the team,” said Özdemir. “Our BI dashboards pull directly from the cleaned DBT models, which has cut support tickets in half. This workflow makes changes easier to track, test, and explain across teams.”

“In my current setup, we’re running a smooth operation with Fivetran pulling data from about 15+ sources straight into Snowflake (our data warehouse). As raw data is messy, we use DBT to transform it into a useful format,”Lokenauth explained.
He told me that what made the biggest difference is breaking down their transformation into stages through a modular DBT-powered approach. “I personally structure it with staging models that clean up the raw data, then intermediate models for business logic, and, finally, smart models that our BI folks can use.”
Version control with git has been an absolute lifesaver for Lockenauth’s team, whenever they have had to roll back changes when something broke.
The company is also serious about testing. “I’ve made it mandatory for my team to run data testing in DBT – basic tasks like making sure ‘order_ids’ are unique, but also more complex business logic tests. Last month, these tests caught a weird edge case where our revenue calculations were off by 3% due to some duplicate transactions.”
DBT also supports environment-specific configurations, allowing teams to differentiate between development and production settings. This means:

“In dev, we use DBT’s target variable to limit data processing to just the last 7 days, while prod runs on the full dataset.” This lets the company save on compute costs and accelerate development.
It’s 9:00 AM, and the day starts – not with coffee – but with a Slack alert. One of the production data tests has failed. The model ensuring unique order IDs is throwing red flags duplicates where there shouldn’t be any. You dive in, tracing the issue to an upstream schema change that quietly introduced an edge case your tests missed.
By 10:30 AM, you’ve patched the DBT model, rerun the pipeline, and added a sturdier test to catch this in the future. Fire extinguished but the process is stronger for it.
At 11:30 AM, it’s time to shift gears. The growth team wants to improve multi-touch attribution. You walk them through current models, explain what’s possible, and brainstorm new logic together. It’s not just numbers, you’re helping frame better questions.
After lunch, 1:00 PM brings a pull request review. A teammate’s new customer segmentation model looks good, but you suggest improvements: naming conventions for consistency, clearer documentation to explain the logic. Not glamorous, but this is the glue that keeps things scalable.

“The root cause was missing data quality checks. Afterward, we implemented Great Expectations with DBT to catch these issues early,” said Lokenauth.
When data quality improves, everyone wins. In the old world, analysts spent half their time firefighting – double-checking numbers, fixing broken dashboards, and chasing down inconsistencies. Business teams were stuck waiting on reports, unsure if the numbers they had were accurate.
