We are talking to Małgorzata Witek, our Senior IT Recruiter, who finds top talents for Life Science projects. She shares insights into finding the right candidates and explains what motivates them to work in this industry.
HOLISTICON CONNECT: Life Science projects are both fascinating and challenging. What’s crucial in candidates for this field?
Małgorzata Witek: In Life Science projects, we require a wide range of skills from our candidates. They must be tech-savvy and excellent communicators who can bridge the gap between research teams, understand the field’s specifics, and handle complex software. Candidates must be genuinely interested in Life Science, as this field demands continuous learning of new concepts and terminology.
How do you prepare for recruitment, and what’s your process like?
Małgorzata: I must understand the job’s core responsibilities and required skills. Additionally, I need to grasp what’s attractive to candidates and what presents a challenge. In Life Science projects, we inform candidates that they will encounter specialized terminology and inquire about their previous experience in similar projects.
Małgorzata: Besides technical skills, communication is crucial, as Life Science professionals often collaborate with research teams. Being open to learning new things is also vital, given the field’s constant evolution.
Yes, I’ve heard that continuous learning is a significant motivator for professionals in this industry. Are there specific elements in job postings for Life Science that are essential for recruitment?
Małgorzata: Yes, information about the Life Science industry attracts candidates. Emphasizing the job’s significance, such as potentially saving lives, matters as much as an attractive salary.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about the challenges in recruiting for Life Science projects?
Małgorzata: Besides technical aspects, data security and application optimization are critical. Handling vast and diverse datasets and integrating external sources are common challenges in this field. So, we’re looking for individuals who thrive on such technological challenges.
Are there specific qualifications or experiences particularly valued in recruiting for Life Science projects?
Małgorzata: Experience in the chemical domain is often highly valuable, especially in research processes and discovering new substances that could become medications. Specialized fields like cheminformatics and bioinformatics, related to Life Science research, are also valuable. We seek candidates with knowledge of modern technologies and programming skills, which are increasingly used in these projects.
It sounds like a significant challenge. Do you see the importance of having a Ph.D. in Life Science during recruitment?
Małgorzata: A Ph.D. is undoubtedly a plus, especially with commercial experience. However, it’s not always a requirement. Sometimes, clients may expect a Ph.D., especially if the position involves working on scientific publications. But such requirements are not common.
Can all the necessary information be found in a resume or LinkedIn profile?
Małgorzata: In candidate searches, we often utilize various sources of information, such as obtained degrees, completed studies, previous employers, and technologies they might know, even if not explicitly mentioned in their professional profiles. Effective searches and asking the right questions are essential because not everything is immediately evident.
Could you share some recruitment principles used in the Life Science project hiring process?
Małgorzata: Certainly, it’s essential to have diverse sources of candidate information. We rely on current employees and technical recruiters to gather data about potential candidates. Diversifying job postings is crucial, as different ad styles attract different candidates. Additionally, we conduct thorough technical interviews and seek to understand the client’s most crucial technologies and skills. Meeting someone already working on the project provides valuable insights into the candidate.
Thank you, Małgorzata, for sharing valuable Life Science project recruitment information.
Małgorzata: Thank you for allowing me to share our approach to this fascinating industry.
