Holisticon Insight (Nexer Insight), NCC, Microsoft, and Scharc have completed the first phase of an innovative joint project focused on Digital Twins. This initiative, centred around the construction of the new Sigfridsborgsskolan in Nacka municipality, Sweden, aims to leverage digital technology to enhance the safety, sustainability, and efficiency of construction design. By integrating advanced IoT and AI solutions, this collaboration marks a significant advancement in more innovative and safer construction practices.
Construction sites are inherently high-risk environments, particularly concerning crane operation. NCC identified this as a critical area needing improvement. Traditional monitoring and ensuring safety methods were insufficient for modern construction projects’ complex demands. Furthermore, there was a pressing need to streamline processes and improve collaboration between the design and production phases using real-time data and advanced analytics.
To address these challenges, the project introduced several innovative solutions. Initially, the focus was on the Connected Construction Site, which aimed to improve crane safety. This was achieved by utilising cameras and advanced software that provided real-time warnings to crane operators about ground-level hazards. Building on this success, the team developed a digital twin of Sigfridsborgsskolan. This digital replica allowed for real-time simulation and analysis of the construction process, integrating data from smart helmets and other sensors to monitor site conditions and enhance safety and efficiency.
Microsoft’s Azure Digital Twins platform served as the technical hub for this project. This IoT platform enabled the creation of digital representations of the construction environment, facilitating tracking people, places, and objects through a spatial intelligence graph. This platform provided the infrastructure for innovative and connected solutions, driving new health, safety, and sustainability opportunities.
The project demonstrated the immense potential of digital twins in the construction industry. The digital twin of Sigfridsborgsskolan provided valuable insights and proved effective in enhancing safety and efficiency on-site. Looking forward, NCC and its partners see significant opportunities for expanding the use of digital twins to other construction sites. They plan to integrate additional parameters, such as energy consumption and climate data, into these digital twins.
This initiative highlighted the importance of a collaborative approach, where each partner contributes expertise to create a robust digital ecosystem. This synergy has set the stage for future innovations and broader adoption of digital twins in the construction industry. NCC, Holisticon Insight (Nexer Insight), Microsoft, and Scharc have laid a strong foundation for the future of construction planning, showcasing the transformative power of digital twins in creating safer, more efficient, and sustainable building practices.
